Politics is a key topic in current affairs. Issues such as the nature of the State, the functions of civil society and the relations between citizens within a global and interactive network dominate contemporary public debate. These topics require a questioning that goes beyond mere 'pragmatic' reading; they demand a theoretical approach capable of understanding political phenomena starting from the grounding principles that explain and grant them meaning. This specialisation in Ethics, Law and Political Thinking - a pioneering collaboration between the Faculty of Letters and the Law School of the University of Lisbon - will provide the indispensable analytical tools to clarify the major underlying issues at play in the general concept of politics. As such, we shall give special attention to the sources of the philosophical tradition, and to the ethical implications of political activity and the juridical and constitutional principles framing it.
