The PhD in English and American Studies seeks to deepen specific study and research objects with originality and potential contributions to the knowledge(s) implied and to the community's progress. The training obtained empowers its doctors to integrate the societal fabric into creative, cultural, administrative and academic functions of a higher level. DEIA is organized in several areas of specialization, from the study of literatures and cultures in English to linguistics, and the arts, in an inter-relational perspective. The multiplicity of topics explored opens up a number of possibilities for research projects. Career opportunities: cultural consultancy, production/programming in companies, organizations and associations, and in the central or local public administration; production/editing /translation of texts; research; higher education teaching.

National Admission 

National Admission Exams 
Students applying to this course are expected to hold an MA degree of 120 ECTS (4 semesters) or to have graduated in a 5year BA course with a Final Dissertation in the English and American Studies area, or other areas deemed adequate by the Scientific Committee to give the student the knowledge and skills required to enter the PhD course. As established in Act 17, DL 74/2006, which regulates third-level degrees and diplomas (updated by Act 107/2008, 25 June, and by Act 230/2009, 14 Sept.), students who “possess an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that, according to the scientifically competent body of the school where they are submitting their application, testifies to their ability to undertake a Master’s degree” are also eligible. Applications must be submitted online and include a Letter of Motivation, CV and all legally required documents. Applicants will be selected by an assessment of their CV and an interview.
